If you're looking for an American-made hitch that rides quietly, offers a quick and easy setup, and provides you with supreme handling, the Blue Ox SwayPro might be just what you're after. When we tested this system, the truck and trailer felt like one unit, and noise wasn't an issue at all. Overall, the SwayPro came out on top and proved to be one of our favorite weight distribution systems.

Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Blue Ox SwayPro Offers Superior Sway Control

Blue Ox SwayPro Positive Caster

The SwayPro is designed to keep your trailer centered behind your vehicle as you tow, no matter what crosswinds or obstacles try to get in your way. To do this, the head on the system is built with a positive caster angle. You might've heard of caster in reference to your car; it's the same technology that vehicles use to stay centered on the road. When you turn a corner in your car and let go of the steering wheel, the wheel automatically returns to center. This is caster taking over. Well, the SwayPro functions much the same way. The positive caster angle that's built into this hitch works in tandem with the tapered spring bars to create a self-centering force that keeps your trailer consistently centered behind your tow vehicle.

Blue Ox SwayPro System with Built-In Sway Control Hooked Up

The trunnions inside the head assembly hold the spring bars securely in position, placing just enough tension on them to cause them to constantly hold your trailer in line.

A close-up shot of the Blue Ox SwayPro's bracket shows the chain rotated and pulled taught with very few chain links exposed

At the other end of this weight distribution system, you'll find 2 more points of built-in sway control. Blue Ox's rotating brackets ensure that the lift chains are pulled as taut as possible, with the majority of the chains wrapped up inside of the brackets. Typically, only a couple of links hang down from each bracket. This means that each chain is held more stable than they are in traditional weight distribution systems, where more than twice as many links are exposed.

This tight, stable design limits the movement of the spring bars so that they can exert more force on your trailer to effectively keep it from swaying - all without the creaking, grinding, and popping noises you get with friction-style sway control setups. Moreover, unlike many friction-style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to back up your trailer without having to remove or disengage anything.

The Blue Ox SwayPro's No-Hassle Setup

When it's time to install the system for the first time, you might be surprised at how easy it is to do. All in all, you can probably have it done within an hour - 2 at the most.

First, the head. With just the right amount of adjustment angle already preset, it's ready to go right out of the box! No need to fine-tune it with hard-to-access washers or a difficult-to-use thumbscrew! The only thing you'll need to adjust is the height of the head on the shank. After that, to get the trunnion bars installed, just insert them into the sockets, and lock them in place with the included pins and clips.

Quick Tip: If you upgrade to a new trailer in the future, and you end up needing a system for a different tongue weight, you can just swap out the SwayPro's spring bars without having to buy a whole new hitch.

To get the Blue Ox SwayPro ready to go, just insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Other weight distribution systems have lift brackets that require you to apply a good amount of leverage to get them to snap up, which can be difficult and frustrating. To get the SwayPro ready to go, all you have to do is insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • Are Replacement Spring Bars Available For The Curt TruTrack 4P Weight Distribution System # C74RV
Hey Paul, I spoke with Curt and they stated that the Replacement Trunnion Spring Bar for Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System # C17535 would only be compatible with the # C17499. The Curt TruTrack 4P Trailer Mounted Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # C74RV (17520) is such a new part that Curt doesn't have replacement parts set up for it yet but is working on it. That being said neither of these would properly distribute the weight and would instead make it worse because...

  • What Is The Best Weight Distribution System For My V-nose Trailer?
Hey Kevin, On a trailer with a v-nose like yours you cannot use the standard weight distribution systems with the chain hangers that go over the top of the trailer frame. You would need to use a system with the Reese Chain Hanger Kit # RP58305, this kit will re locate the chain hangers to a spot on the frame you are able to mount. You would then go with a weight distribution system like # BXW0550 for your trailer to eliminate that sway. The Blue Ox system I linked is going to be perfect...

For that the best option is from Blue Ox: - Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution with Sway Control # BXW0550 This system, which is rated for tongue weights between 350 lbs and 550 lbs, is quiet because it is a chain-style so you won't hear the noise that comes with the...

  • How to Choose Weight Distribution Hitch Based on Tongue Weight
Hi David; you're on the right track with the tongue weight. The tongue weight capacity of your tow vehicle doesn't play a role in choosing a weight distribution hitch (WDH) aside from knowing your vehicle limitations. For a WDH you want to choose based on the actual tongue weight of your loaded setup. If you anticipate the tongue weight of your setup to fluctuate between 400 and 500 lbs then the # BXW0550 would be perfect. The Blue Ox SwayPro # BXW0550 has a tongue weight range of 350...

  • Is There Such Thing As A Weight Distribution Hitch For An I-Beam Tongue?
Hey good question Ronald. Weight distribution hitches are made for A-frame trailers, but it is possible to use one on an I-beam tongue. What you do is use a pole tongue adapter like the Blue Ox Pole Tongue Weight Distributing Hitch Adapter # BXW4023. This bolts on to the straight tongue and gives you the outward attachment points for the WD system. I included a few pictures below to show you examples of what that will look like. The adapter I mentioned is made to work with the Blue Ox...

  • What Weight Distribution System do I Want to Eliminate Sag in My 2016 Ford Flex when Towing Camper?
Hello Dwayne, Congrats on the new camper! What did you end up getting? Yes, a weight distribution system is going to be your best option when pulling your camper to eliminate that sag. When your camper is fully loaded you want your tongue weight to be between 10-15% of your overall weight, that would put between 320-480 pounds. • Will A WD Hitch For A 8,500 lb Trailer Work With A 3,500 lb Trailer?
Hello Jeff, good question. The short answer is, probably not. All weight distribution (WD) hitches have a range of tongue weights they will work with, and you want to make sure your trailers weight falls within that specified range. For example, the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BLU77FR will work on trailers with a tongue weight between 800 and 1,000 lbs. So this could be used on a 8,500 lb trailer, but would not work for a 3,500 lb trailer. The tongue weight would...
